A Boutique

History.

Law firm boutiques come and go, but at Kostelanetz, we’ve been excelling in our core practice areas for 80 years. With each generation training the next, we have decades of experience in tax controversy, white collar criminal defense, complex commercial civil litigation, tax planning, trusts & estates, securities law, and government contracts and procurement.

since-1946

Our firm was launched on July 23, 1946, when Boris Kostelanetz and Howard F. Corcoran, colleagues at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan, teamed up to form Corcoran & Kostelanetz in New York. Corcoran later moved to Washington, D.C., where he became a federal judge.

As we celebrate our 80th anniversary as a firm, we’re looking both back at our storied history and to the future, as we carry forward the guiding principles of our firm, exemplified by Boris and echoed by our firm’s leadership over the years.

As it has throughout our history, much of our practice is government-facing, and we’re comfortable handling such matters because, just like Boris, many of our lawyers have worked in government. We also often handle matters of public importance and understand how politics and media can impact the law. Because of the reputation Boris and others at our firm have built, Kostelanetz attorneys are viewed as thought leaders whose experience and knowledge have informed some of the thorniest and most complex tax and white collar defense issues and jurisprudence.

We See Our Firm as Boris’ Legacy

We are “Kostelanetz LLP” because Boris Kostelanetz (1911–2006) was a founder of our firm, but also because our essence can be traced to his remarkable life and career.

    Our History

Like Boris’ practice, ours is grounded in New York City and Washington, D.C., but is national in scope. For much of our history, we have practiced from Manhattan, but in 2017, we expanded by opening an office in Washington, D.C., where Boris was detailed and his original partner, Howard, worked as a lawyer and federal judge, and in 2024, we expanded by opening an office in Atlanta, GA. We remain best known for the practice area that Boris – the Dean of the Tax Litigation Bar – pioneered, but our other practices also have their origins in Boris’ work, ranging from white-collar criminal cases to civil matters in diverse areas such as taxation, contracts, government procurement, and trusts & estates.
